That base and drainage work is buried once the patio is down, which is exactly why a quick, cheap install is the one that skips it and moves within a season or two.

On material it is look and budget. Concrete and brick pavers are the everyday pick: a wide range of colors and shapes, patterns like herringbone or running bond, and a soldier-course border to frame the field, plus single units that lift out and get replaced instead of patching a slab. Flagstone and natural stone cost more and suit the older Denton homes where the rest of the yard is already stone, with the irregular cut and natural color that a poured slab cannot match. A paver patio generally runs about $15 to $30 per square foot installed; flagstone and natural stone run higher.
