Under the stone is the part that decides whether it lasts: a sealed basin, a correctly sized pump, and clean plumbing runs back to it. We size the pump to the height of the spill so the sound is right and the water does not blow off the edge in wind. In a Dallas winter the pump and exposed lines have to be drained or kept running so a hard freeze does not crack them, and we set the system up so winterizing is simple. Upkeep is topping the water, an occasional pump clean, and keeping algae down.
