An outdoor fountain in Dallas runs from about $2,500 for a cast stone tiered fountain on a basin up to $12,000 or more for a built wall or spillover feature in stone. Most are pondless and recirculating: the water drops into a hidden reservoir and a pump sends it back up, so there is no standing pond to keep clean. We set them as a focal point at a front entry in Preston Hollow, in a courtyard, or on a patio in Lakewood or the M Streets.

Material is the look. Cast stone gives you a formal tiered fountain at the lower end of the budget. Natural stone reads heavier and more permanent and suits the older Dallas homes where stone is already part of the house. Concrete sits in between and takes a finish. Placement decides how it sounds: a fountain tucked into a courtyard or against an entry wall carries the water sound back to you, while one in the open spreads it thin.

The pump, the basin, and the plumbing are what make a fountain last. We size the pump to the height of the spill, run the line clean, and set the reservoir on a stable base. Dallas black clay moves with the seasons, so a fountain set on bare ground will tilt and the water will sheet to one side. We pour a pad so it stays level. For the few hard freezes we get each winter, we show you how to shut it down and drain the pump so it does not crack.

Upkeep is light: top off the water in the heat, and clear the basin and pump screen a couple of times a season so it runs clean. A fountain pairs well with an outdoor fireplace or the rest of our patio stonework when you are building out a courtyard or an entry.
