If your pool tile is cracked, faded, or falling off, you're probably wondering what it costs to fix. That's the most common question we get from homeowners across Dallas-Fort Worth.
The honest answer: it depends on the job. But we can give you real numbers to work with so you're not going in blind.
Waterline Tile Repair: $15 to $30 Per Linear Foot
Most tile problems start at the waterline. That's where chemicals, sun, and water all meet. It's the hardest-working section of tile on your pool.
If the damage is in a few spots, a targeted repair is your cheapest option. Expect to pay $15 to $30 per linear foot, depending on the tile type and how much prep the surface needs.
A typical pool has about 80 to 120 linear feet of waterline. So a full waterline replacement usually runs $1,200 to $3,600.
Full Pool Retile: $3,000 to $8,000+
If the damage goes past the waterline, or you just want a new look, a full retile is the move. Most residential pools in DFW fall in the $3,000 to $8,000 range.
Bigger pools, complex shapes, spas, and water features push the price higher. The two biggest factors are pool size and the material you pick.
Material Costs (Installed)
The tile itself makes up a big part of your total cost. Here's what the common options run per square foot:
- Glass mosaic: $10 to $50/sq ft. The most popular pick for DFW pools. Holds up great against chemicals and UV. Basic solid colors are on the low end. Custom blends and iridescent finishes cost more.
- Porcelain: $5 to $25/sq ft. The budget-friendly option. Durable, lots of styles, handles Texas heat well. Great if you want a clean look without top-dollar cost.
- Natural stone: $15 to $40/sq ft. Travertine, slate, and other stones give a high-end custom feel. They need sealing and are pickier about pool chemicals. But a well-done stone tile job can last decades.
What Moves the Price Up or Down
Beyond materials, here's what affects your final quote:
- Pool size and shape. Curves take longer than rectangles. Raised walls, spillovers, and spas all add time and cost.
- Surface prep. If the old tile was installed wrong (bad adhesive, no bonding coat, damaged surface), we have to fix that first. This can add $500 to $2,000. Skipping it means you're retiling again in 3 years.
- Access. Tight backyards, elevated decks, or limited equipment access add labor time.
- Existing damage. If the bond beam (the concrete lip at the top of the pool wall) is cracked or crumbling, that has to be repaired before any tile goes on.
Why DFW Is Hard on Pool Tile
North Texas is one of the toughest climates for pool tile in the country. Two reasons:
The heat. Pool surfaces can hit 150+ degrees in a DFW summer. Tile and grout expand during the day and contract at night. After years of this cycle, grout cracks and tiles come loose. Cheap tile with the wrong adhesive won't make it 5 years here.
Clay soil. Most of North Texas sits on expansive clay. When it rains, the clay swells. When it's dry, it shrinks. That movement pushes into your pool shell. It's behind a lot of the retile jobs we do: hairline cracks, tiles with a lip, whole sections popping off.
Repair or Full Retile?
Not every tile problem needs a full retile. Here's a quick way to decide:
Go with a repair if:
- The damage is in a small area (a few feet of waterline, a handful of tiles)
- The rest of the tile is solid and well-bonded
- You can find matching tile
Go with a full retile if:
- Tile is failing in multiple spots
- Grout is breaking down throughout the pool
- Your tile is discontinued and you can't get a good match
- You want a completely fresh look
If a repair will hold, we'll tell you. We're not going to push a full retile when a fix does the job.
